Year 2000 a 'Personal Best' for Susquehanna Nuclear Plant
LCG, Jan. 2, 2001The 2,200 megawatt Susquehanna nuclear power plant operated by a PPL Corp. subsidiary had the best year of its life last year and got out a news release on New Year's Day to tell the world about it.PPL owns 90 percent of the plant, which is located about 20 miles from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., with Allegheny Electric Cooperative owning the other 10 percent.The 1,050 megawatt Susquehanna Unit 1 began commercial operation in June 1983 and its 1,150 megawatt sister, Susquehanna Unit 2, was brought on line in February 1985. Pennsylvania Power & Light Co., was the owner-operator's name at the time, but a holding company has since been formed and now the facility is operated by PPL Susquehanna, a subsidiary of a subsidiary.Last year, Susquehanna, hampered only by one short unscheduled outage, cranked out more than 17.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which was more than it had produced in any previous year. For a frugal householder using a little less than 500 kilowatt-hours a month, that's enough juice to last 3 million years. To look at it another way, Susquehanna kept the lights on in 3 million homes all year.PPL official Herbert D. Woodeshick said "This record is tribute to the outstanding efforts of nearly 1,400 employees who are dedicated to ensuring that PPL Susquehanna is one of the best operating and safest nuclear power plants in the country."
