Indian Point 2 Goes Back to Work
LCG, Jan. 3, 2001The Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant near Buchanan, N.Y., was connected to the regional transmission grid early this morning and by the time the Nuclear Regulatory Commission daily plant status report was compiled it was at 15 percent of full power.Neil Sheehan, an NRC spokesman, said plant operators had to deal with some last-minute problems during the restart, including a minor coolant leak. "Small potatoes," he said, "but it's something they'll have to watch."Indian Point 2 had been shut down since February 15 of last year when, in the worst accident the plant had ever had, radioactive water from a leaky steam generator tube contaminated clean water that is turned to steam to spin the plant's turbines. A tiny puff of radioactive steam was emitted into the atmosphere but was gone before it could be measured.Consolidated Edison Co. of New York, the plant's owner, wanted to simply plug the leaky tube and restart the facility a practice it had been following on Indian Point 2's steam generators for years. But the NRC told the company it was time to install the new steam generators Con Edison had kept in storage since 1988.Plant operators will bring the reactor up to full power gradually, holding at several points for tests. The NRC will be watching closely. Sheehan said the NRC would be keeping a tight rein on the plant because of "the general overall poor performance that we've seen."Entergy Corp. has agreed to buy Indian Point 2 and the mothballed Indian Point 1 once Unit 2 is up to full power. At that time, the NRC may be able to relax a bit. Entergy knows how to run nuclear power plants.
