EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Fuel Cell Energy to Make Power at Sewage Facility

LCG, Jan. 25, 2001Fuel Cell Energy Inc. said this morning that it had signed a deal with King County, Wash., to install a one megawatt fuel cell at a county sewage treatment plant in Renton as a demonstration project partly funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The $18.8 million cost of the two-year demonstration project at the South Wastewater Treatment Facility will be borne equally by Duel Cell Energy and King County, the company said. The amount of money kicked in by the EPA was not disclosed.

According to Jerry Leitman, chief executive of Fuel Cell Energy, the installed fuel cell will convert methane gas produced by the treatment plant's digester into electricity. "This project will demonstrate the versatility of fuel use with the 'Direct Fuel Cell', as well as its capability to produce more electricity than other technologies using the same quantity of fuel," he said.

King County Executive Ron Sims offered "This is an important project as we look to meeting our future power needs in this new era of higher priced electricity."
