Deal With Power Crisis Now, New York City Urged
LCG, Jan. 26, 2001A group of New York City business and civic leaders yesterday called for quick and decisive government action to prevent a budding energy crisis that could result in devastating blackouts, the New York Daily News reported today."What's happening in California can happen here in New York," said John Gilbert, co-chairman of the New York Building Congress Energy Committee, in releasing a 28-page report warning that the Big Apple faces a critical shortage of 2,000 to 3,000 megawatts of electricity over the next five years. The study warns that the power deficit would result in rolling blackouts, soaring electricity prices and businesses leaving the city.In addition to the Building Congress, the group is made up of the Association for a Better New York, the Building and Construction Trades Council, the New York City Partnership and the Real Estate Board. Among the proposal contained in their report are accelerating conservation programs, creating time-or-day electricity pricing and expediting the power plant siting process. The Daily News talked to Leonard Impastato, a vice president of Fischbach & Moore Electric in Queens, who said "Government has to take a real strong approach to getting siting approval on these plants. We need to cut down the approval time."The paper also interviewed Susan Stetzer, a member of Communities United for Responsible Energy, who called any proposal to further streamline the regulatory process "totally outrageous."Steven Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board, said neighborhood groups are "going to raise their voices a lot louder" when they can't turn their lights on.
