Enron Shelves Bosnia Projects in Political Uncertainty

LCG, Feb. 8, 2001Enron Corp. said this morning that it would hold off on several hundred million dollars worth of projects in Bosnia pending resolution of the Balkan country's political problems.

Yesterday, the Bosnian parliament was unable to agree on a new prime minister as a power struggle, dating to last November's elections, continued between nationalists and Western-backed political groups.

An Enron spokeswoman in Bosnia, Zdenka Gast, said the ministerial vacuum left the company no one in the government with whom to negotiate. She said Enron was close to signing deals with the Bosnian-Croat government power company Elekroprivreda HZ Herceg-Bosna and metals firm Soko about construction of two hydroelectric power plants and one thermal power plant.

Those projects will be tabled until political uncertainty is resolved, she said. "We are concerned about the projects that we have been negotiating with the authorities here over last year," Gast told a news conference.
