Calpine to Build 600 Megawatt Wisconsin Plant

LCG, Feb. 14, 2001Calpine Corp. said yesterday its Sky Gen Energy subsidiary will build a 600 megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle merchant power plant in Wisconsin at a cost of $350 million.

The new facility, to be called the RiverGen Energy Center, will supply 453 megawatts of capacity to Wisconsin Power & Light Co. under a 10-year contract. The balance of the plant's output will be sold on the regional wholesale power market.

Bill Harvey, president of WP&L's parent holding company Alliant Energy Inc., said "Wisconsin is in desperate need of additional electric infrastructure. Along with Sky Gen Energy, we are taking a significant step forward to help address this critical state issue."

The proposed plant will be located on property adjacent to an existing WP&L generating station near Beloit, Wisc. Construction is schedule to begin this summer and commercial operations are penciled in for the summer of 2003.

Sky Gen president Michael Polsky said "By locating the RiverGen facility at WP&L's existing plant site, we can lower costs, and optimize efficiencies to build a world-class energy resource."
