Brazil Gives Enron, British Gas, Access to Bolivian Gas

LCG, Feb. 15, 2001Brazil's National Petroleum Agency said yesterday Enron Corp. of the U.S. and British Gas Plc would be allowed access to the Bolivia-Brazil natural gas pipeline, despite objections by the government-owned oil giant Petrobras.

The move could mean further loosening of Petrobras' control over the pipeline, which has ample unused capacity.

The national Petroleum Agency said Enron and British Gas "will be able to use the capacity of the pipeline which is not being used, compensating the operator with a tariff for distance, in order to pump up to 1 million cubic meters of gas a day each."

The addition of 2 million cubic meters (about 70 million cubic feet) will increase throughflow on the pipeline by about 29 percent, to 315 million cubic feet per day. Brazil is under pressure to make good on its agreement with Bolivia to buy up to about 1 billion cubic feet per day of Bolivian gas.

Enron will transport the gas to 12 points in Minas Gerais state and Sao Paulo state. British Gas will pump gas to eight points in Sao Paulo. Local sources say that both companies are expected to request increased volumes and that other companies may request access to the pipeline.
