Southern Unit Plans Increase in Europe Generation

LCG, Feb. 15, 2001Mirant Corp. said this morning at a company press conference in Berlin that it was seeking significant increases in generation capacity on the Continent by 2006.

"We plan to raise our European power generation capacity to 12,000 megawatts from currentlyaround 1,000 megawatts over the next five years," spokesman Markus Baluska said. "The expansion will be made through acquisitions and co-operation agreements with existing producers as well as through new plant projects."

Mirant has already placed orders for turbines for nine cogeneration plants with a combined capacity of about 3,500 megawatts. That equipment is scheduled to be delivered by early 2004.

Stefan Sprick-Schuette, chief of Mirant's German operations said the company was looking at Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Mirant is the inexplicable new name chosen for the former Southern Energy. It is still a subsidiary of The Southern Co.
