Germany's RWE Moves Further into Dutch Gas Market

LCG, Feb. 23, 2001RWE Group of Essen, the big German electric and gas utility, said this morning that its RWE Gas AG has "further consolidated" its position in the Dutch natural gas market with the acquisition of The Netherlands' fifth-largest gas company Obragas.

RWE Gas will acquire a 90 percent interest in Obragas for 329 million euros ($298 million U.S.), subject to approval by Obragas shareholders and Dutch regulators. The economic effect of the transaction will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2001, RWE said.

Last month, RWE acquired 90 percent of Intergas, a smaller Dutch gas company, and last year bought Nutsbedrijf Haarlemmermeer, an even smaller company. The three acquisitions give RWE a 7 percent share of the Dutch natural gas market, with about 365,000 customers.

Manfred Scholle, chief executive of RWE Gas, said the acquisition of Obragas "will strengthen the position of the RWE Group in the international gas business." The company is Germany's second-largest gas supplier and has interests in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. Belgium may be next, according to a company spokesman.
