California's High Desert Plant Begins Construction

LCG, Feb. 27, 2001Constellation Energy Group said yesterday that construction will begin in early April on the 750 megawatt High Desert power plant near Victorville, Calif. The permitting process for the new facility took nearly five years.

Despite a growing population and faster growing energy use in Southern California, High Desert will be the first new power plant to serve the region in more than a decade.

"We are very pleased to be moving forward with this major new source of power at a time when California is so clearly in need of additional electric generation. When it comes on line, this project will contribute significantly to easing the state's energy crisis," said Eric Grubman, co-president of Constellation.

Engineering, procurement, and construction services for the project will be provided by KiewitIndustrial Co. a power plant construction firm based in Omaha, Neb. Bibb and Associates, a Kiewit subsidiary based in Kansas City, will design the project.

High Desert project manager Tom Barnett noted the long permitting process in California. "The fact that this project has received all necessary permits from federal, state, and local agencies assures that we will be a good neighbor in the community with no significant environmental impacts," he said.

Constellation Energy Group is also parent holding company for Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.
