Avista Gets Environmental Okay to Run Plant Harder

LCG, Feb. 28, 2001Avista Corp. said yesterday it had reached agreement with the Spokane (Wash.) County Air Pollution Control Authority to extend the operating hours of a 60 megawatt combustion turbine power plant the company operates in the city of Spokane. The 90-day extended operating period began February 21.

Avista said the agreement will allow it to use the plant to bring on added generating capacity "during a time of increased energy demand and continued energy market volatility."

Because emissions from the plant will exceed current permit limits during this period of extendedoperations, Avista has agreed to develop an "environmental offset project" to achieve future, verifiableemission reductions in Spokane's federally designated non-attainment areas.

Also as a condition of the agreement, Avista will make an additional contribution to low-incomeenergy assistance funds in its service area. The amount of the contribution will be based on the numberof hours of plant operation during the 90-day period and could exceed $300,000.
