Wisconsin Governor Backs Power System Growth

LCG, March 12, 2001Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum last week told a conference in Milwaukee that he supports additional electric power generation and transmission in his state, Wisconsin Energy Corp. said Friday.

"Wisconsin has long enjoyed inexpensive and reliable energy. However, Wisconsin's energy supplyis being stretched to the limit and the solutions must be identified prospectively, not retrospectively," McCallum said.

Talking of changes that will occur in his state's electric industry, the governor noted that Wisconsin Energy's restructuring plan has received support from the electric utility industry, municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, the business community, customers and labor.

"When we've got energy companies, customers, environmental groups, all endorsing the sameapproach to solving the state's energy needs, it's a big step forward," he said.

On February 23, Wisconsin Energy and a group called the Customers First Coalition, said they had hammered out a framework that could lead to additional power development in the state. Last week, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission said it would entertain comments on the plan until March 21.

Under the plan, Wisconsin Energy will create a subsidiary to build, own and operate the power facilities of operating subsidiary Wisconsin Electric Co. The utility will then lease the plants back for 20- to 25-year periods. The plan calls for the company to bring 2,800 megawatts of new generation on line, improve its electric distribution system and upgrade existing power plants.
