540 Megawatt Powerhouse Approved for Ohio

LCG, March 15, 2001--The staff of the Ohio Power Siting Board has recommended conditional approval of a plan by Calpine Corp. to build a new 540 megawatt electric generation facility in Sandusky County, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio said yesterday.

The Fremont Energy Center's preferred site for the facility is located on approximately 80 acres of land in Fremont, about 30 miles southeast of Toledo. The Staff's recommendation of approval came with a request that 21 specific conditions become part of any certificate issued by the board, PUCO said.

The new facility would consist of two natural gas-fueled combustion turbines and a single steam turbine running in combined cycle. Fuel would be delivered through a connection with a Dominion East Ohio pipeline that lies about a mile north of the site.

Power produced at the plant would be delivered to the grid through two substations located in Fremont, one owned by First Energy Corp. and the other by American Electric Power Co.

Calpine estimates that the plant would cost about $260 million. If approved construction would begin this May and commercial operation could begin in May 2003.

In the past 10 months, the Ohio Power Siting Board has approved 5,665 megawatts of new generation. Of that, 1,230 are already on-line. California take note.
