Mirant Plans 894 Megawatts for Wisconsin

LCG, March 16, 2001--Mirant Corp. said this morning it plans to build an 894 megawatt natural gas-fueled merchant power plant near the town of Plover, Wisc., about 30 miles south of Wausau.

"The proposed Portage County plant would serve the central Wisconsin area and have access to regionally interconnected power pools in all or part of 12 Midwest states and central Canadianprovinces," explained Richard J. Pershing, president of Mirant Americas.

Two units of the plant, with a combined capacity of 586 megawatts, would be configured for combined cycle operation as a baseload facility while four others, totaling 308 megawatts of output, would be simple cycle turbines operated as peaking units.

The power plant is expected to be built on 54 acres of land in an industrial corridor. Assuming timely completion of appropriate state and local permitting, Mirant plans to have the power plant working by 2003.
