Auction Plans Take Shape for Vermont Yankee

LCG, March 27, 2001Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp. said yesterday it is moving forward on the planned auction of its 540 megawatt nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vt., and has retained New York investment bank J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. as financial adviser.

Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power had originally agreed to sell the facility to Amergen Energy Co. for $50 million, but when other nuclear power plants in the Northeast were sold at prices exceeding $1 billion, the Vermont Public Service Board rejected that deal and said to hold an auction.

Since then, other companies have expressed an interest in Vermont Yankee, including units of Entergy Corp., Dominion Resources Inc. and Constellation Energy Croup Inc. Amergen, a joint venture between Exelon Corp. and British Energy Plc, is still looking at the plant as well.

Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power said it expects a successful auction. "We have seen significant interest recently from potential auction bidders for the plant," chief executive Ross Barkhurst said.

Vermont Yankee generated about 80 percent of the power consumed in Vermont.
