NuScale Power Achieves Standard Design Approval from NRC for 77 MW SMR

LCG, May 30, 2025--NuScale Power Corporation (NuScale), a leading provider of advanced small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology, yesterday announced that it has received design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its uprated 77 MW power modules. NuScale states that it remains the only SMR technology company with design approval from the NRC, and the company remains on track for deployment by 2030, with 50- and 77-MW SMR options.

EIA Presents Analysis of California's Solar and Wind Power Curtailment Challenges

LCG, May 29, 2025--The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released an analysis yesterday showing that the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the grid operator for most of the state, is increasing its curtailment of the rapidly growing solar- and wind-powered generation facilities in order to balance electricity supply and demand, which is necessary to maintain a stable electric system.

Kevin S. Crutchfield will become president of Coastal Coal Co., an affiliate of El Paso Corp. subsidiary El Paso Merchant Energy, beginning today. He most recently was president of Amvest Corp. and previously held the position of chairman, president and chief executive of Cyprus Australia Coal Co., as well as other executive positions with Pittston Coal Co.

Michael P. Holstein, a utility executive with more than 20 years of business experience, has been named vice president and chief financial officer of the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator Inc.

Constance H. Lau has been elected a director of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. and appointed president and chief executive officer of American Savings Bank, F.S.B., one of Hawaiian Electric's two core operating subsidiaries. She most recently was treasurer and chief financial officer of HEI Power Corp., another subsidiary.

David G. Mengebier has bee promoted to senior vice president for governmentaland public affairs by CMS Energy Corp., succeeding John W. Clark, who will retire effective August 1. Mengebier is currently vice president of governmental and international affairs, based in Washington, D.C.

Mark Ruelle, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Sierra Pacific Resources Inc. has been named president of subsidiary Nevada Power Co., replacing Steve Rigazio, who is retiring June 1 due to health reasons. Ruelle will continue to serve as chief financial officer until a replacement is named.

W. Mark Schmitz has been appointed vice president and chief financial officer of fuel cell maker Plug Power Inc. He joins the company from General Motors Corp., for which he most recently was vice president and chief financial officer of its DirecTV Latin America subsidiary.
