Biomass Power Plant in California Begins Operation

LCG, June 18, 2001A financial subsidiary of natural gas giant El Paso Corp. said this morning that a biomass-fueled power plant near Fresno, Calif., for which it provided funding has begun commercial operation two weeks ahead of schedule and is pumping 25 megawatts of electricity into the energy-starved California wholesale power market.

EP Power Finance provided funding to Madera Power, a subsidiary of Energy Products of Idaho, enabling the company to acquire and refurbish the previously dormant power plant. The facility uses biomass materials that typically include grape by-products, wood chips, and tree trimmings that would otherwise be disposed of in local landfills or burned in open fields.

"We have been pleased to work with EP Power Finance to help provide additional electricity to theCalifornia grid while using an innovative renewable energy source," said Leroy Pope, generalmanager of Energy Products of Idaho. "This partnership has enabled our company to pursue thisviable opportunity to revive a quiescent project to help meet local energy demands."

Power generated by the Madera plant is being sold into the wholesale merchant market. The project attracted considerable interest due to the rapid start-up date, and the company is still in the process of negotiating long-term contracts with a number of potential customers.
