AEP to Restart Both Cook Reactors this Month
LCG, Sept. 5, 2001--American Electric Power Co. said yesterday it expects to restart both units of its D. C. Cook nuclear power plant by the end of this month. The facility, near Benton Harbor, Mich., is capable of generating 2,060 megawatts of power.The 1,000 megawatt Unit 1 was taken off line on August 27 to replace a circulating water pump discharge valve which may have been damaged by silt intrusion from Lake Michigan. The valve has since been replaced. Silt intrusion also forced the shutdown of the 1,060 megawatt Unit 2 three days later.AEP said it has determined that the silt in Unit 2 will require cleaning and flushing of several plant components along with repair of a discharge strainer on the plant's service water pumps. The pump discharge strainer degradation resulted in a build-up of zebra mussel shells, which in turn, contributed to the silting problem."Our team has done a great job through the holiday weekend identifying the causes of the siltintrusion and required repairs," said Bob Powers, senior vice president for nuclear generation. "There's known scope for maintenance and some enhanced instrumentation to install, but we have an identified path for the safe return-to-service of both units."
