Black Hills Buys Nevada Power Plant from Enron

LCG, July 25, 2001Black Hills Corp. said yesterday its independent power subsidiary had agreed to purchase a 273 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant in North Las Vegas from Enron Corp. for an undisclosed sum.

Black Hills Energy Capital Inc. explained that expansion of the existing 51 megawatt cogeneration facility is underway, with construction of a new 222 megawatt combined-cycle on the same site. Commercial operation of the new plant is scheduled for the summer of next year.

The company said it has secured long-term contracts for the output of the facility as part of the transaction with Enron. A 15-year contract requires the unnamed purchaser to provide the plant with fuel when power is dispatched.

Black Hills Corp. Chairman Daniel P. Landguth said "This project, combined with our other power plants in operation and under construction, gets us to our corporate goal of 1,000 megawatts of independent power production by 2003."

Black Hills Corp. is parent company for Black Hills Power Co., an electric utility serving western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana.
