New York Power Authority to Develop New Nuclear Facility in Upstate New York

LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

East Coast Heat Prompts Calls to Save Power

LCG, Aug. 7, 2001--A heat wave along the Eastern Seaboard has prompted two of the region's independent system operators, and their utility members, to call for conservation of electricity today.

Both the PJM Interconnection, which manages the transmission grid of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, and the New York Independent System Operator have warned consumers that power supplies would be tight after several days of hot weather.

"The concrete heats up, the buildings heat up. We are expecting there will be major demand Tuesday and it will be a very tight power situation, so consumers will need to use energy wisely," said Carol Murphy, a spokeswoman for NYISO.

Consumers have been urged to set their air conditioners on a higher temperature than normal on Monday night and to avoid using appliances like washing machines, electric stoves, clothes dryers and dishwashers until Tuesday evening when it was likely to be cooler.

Neither ISO predicted blackouts, but both said the supply situation was tight.

Not as tight as in 1965, when about 800,000 New Yorkers were trapped for hours in high-rise buildings and subways during a massive blackout. That event led to the formation of the North American Electric Reliability Council which, with its ten regional councils, sets operating standards for the national grid.
