Minnesota Power Plans 160 Megawatt Peaker

LCG, Aug. 9, 2001--Minnesota Power & Light Co. said this morning it plans to build a natural gas-fired electric generating facility near Superior, Wis., to help meet the region's energy needs during times of peak electrical demand.

The 160 megawatt simple-cycle peaking plant would be able to serve the entire Duluth-Superior area if necessary, the company said. The gas-fueled facility would employ a single General Electric 7FA combustion turbine and begin commercial operation in late 2003.

"By adding a generating facility within our service territory, we are providing for the growing electrical needs of our area, while strengthening the regional power grid," said Minnesota Power President Bob Edwards. "The construction of this plant is consistent with our strategy to further increase our presence in the unregulated generation business."

The plant would be built on a site that offers ready access to existing transmission lines and nearby natural gas pipelines. Superior Water Light & Power Co. is currently building a lateral line into the site with the work to be completed later this year.

The new plant will be owned and operated by Rainy River Energy Corp., a Minnesota Power subsidiary created for the purpose. The facility is designed to provide for future expansion to about 300 megawatts.
