Eastern Heat Wave Ends; Storms Disrupt Power
LCG, Aug. 13, 2001--A week-long heat wave in the U.S. Northeast came to an end Friday with very few disruptions of electric power despite record temperatures being set almost everywhere. But the storms that cooled the countryside did plenty of damage.Gale force winds, rain and lightning roared through the region, leaving a trail of fallen power lines and disrupting electric service to more than 100,000 customers. On Long Island, more than 9,000 lightning strikes were detected during a storm that began around 3:30 Friday afternoon. More than 60,000 households lost power. Another 20,000 customers saw their lights blink out in Brooklyn, Westchester, Staten Island and the Bronx. In Connecticut, almost 40,000 lost power and another 11,000 in New Jersey were hit. In Philadelphia, at least 40,000 were affected by outages and thousands more in Boston.Michael Clendenin, a spokesman for Consolidated Edison Co. of New York, said "In most cases it's lightning or wind or both striking power lines," he said. "We have dozens of reports of lightning strikes and wires being blown down or a combination of the two."While the Northeast weathered the heat with minimum power disruptions, it wasn't as lucky in weathering some real weather.
