Philly Gas Works Proposes 20 Percent Rate Cut

LCG, Aug. 17, 2001--The Philadelphia Gas Works yesterday filed a proposal with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission that would reduce rates to its more than 520,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers by as much as $171 million, or 20 percent.

Natural gas prices have been dropping after reaching all-time highs during the past winter, and the Philly Gas Works wants to share the savings with its customers, without being told to do so.

"We're delighted that we were able to come to this agreement that enables PGW to return thesesavings to our customers as soon as possible," said Craig White, a senior vice president and the municipal utility's interim chief operating officer.

The Philly Gas Works uses the word "interim" a lot in its job titles.

The rate proposal calls for two cuts that would total 20 percent. On September 1, a 16 percent, or $135 million cut in the so-called "gas cost rate" would result in a $19 per month savings on the typical residential home heating customer's bill. Then on December 1, an additional $6 per month reduction amounting to $36 million is anticipated.

White says the proposal also sets up rules for the Philly Gas Works to continually review and update natural gas prices for the remainder of the year. "We're watching natural gas costs very carefully and if their downward trend continues we'll be able to reflect those reductions in our rates," he said.

Somehow, the Philly Gas Works has been providing natural gas service to the City of Brotherly Love for more than 165 years.
