U.S. Coal-fired Generating Capacity Retirements in 2025 Are Less Than 20 Percent of Retirements in 2022

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Requirements to Restore American Energy Dominance

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Richard K. Gordon has been elected a director of natural gas distributor Atmos Energy Corp. He is vice chairman for investment banking with Merrill Lynch & Co.

Richard K. McGee was named president and chief executive of the Duke Energy International unit of Duke Energy Corp., replacing Bruce A. Williamson. McGee joined Duke Energy in 1999 as vice president and general counsel of Duke Energy Services.

Michael S. Peck has been assigned by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as resident inspector at the Richland, Wash. nuclear power plant operated by the Washington Public Power Supply System. He makes the move from the nearby Hanford facility of the Department of Energy.

Carlos Saladrigas has been elected a director of Progress Energy Inc. effective September 1. He is chief executive of ADP TotalSource and chairman of Premier American Bank in Miami, Fla.

Bruce A. Williamson has been named president and chief executive of the newly created Duke Energy Global Markets unit of Duke Energy Corp., with responsibility for all Duke Energy business units with global commodities and international business positions. He has been president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy International since 1998.
