Calpine Asks New York to Okay 540 Megawatt Project
LCG, Aug. 27, 2001--Calpine Corp. said Friday it has filed a formal application with New York state regulators for the development of a proposed 540 megawatt power plant to be located in the town of Wawayanda, about 40 miles northwest of New York City.Calpine project manager David A. Devine said, "Experts agree that New York State requires a significant investment in new electric generating resources. Our project will help meet this need, and will have a positive effect on the local economy in many ways."Calpine has conducted extensive environmental analyses, and we have demonstrated that our facility will be a very positive addition to New York State's energy mix without adverse environmental or other impacts. In fact, bringing new sources of clean energy on line will eventually displace some of the power produced by the State's older, less environmentally-friendly power plants," he said.The proposed plant will be a natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle facility equipped with modern emissions controls, Calpine said, and will be among the cleanest sources of new generation in the United States.Friday's filing was made under Article 10 of the New York State Public Service law, which addresses such environmental and siting matters as project design, location, fuel use, construction and operating conditions, air and water quality, water usage and discharge, aquatic resources, off-site noise levels, cultural resources and visual considerations, geology and seismology, land uses and local laws, vegetation and terrestrial ecology and off-site facilities.Cultural resources?Calpine hopes to get approval in time to begin construction late next year so that it can begin selling power into the regional wholesale market in 2004.
