Western India Faces Load Shedding

LCG, Sept. 11, 2001--Official representing the state electricity boards of five Indian states met last Saturday in Panaji, Goa, to set up a 'round-the-clock load shedding schedule for Maharashtra and four surrounding states.

The result, according to this morning's edition of the Economic Times, an Indian business newspaper, will be power cuts that could hit at any time in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa and Chattisgarth.

The paper said "Darkness looms over the five states as the western region (of India) faces a sever power crisis with the shortfall touching 3,500 (megawatts)." Demand in the region has reached 22,500 megawatts, the paper said, while power production is around 19,000 megawatts.

"There is a huge gap between the demand and supply which, we fear, could widen further since there is no additional electricity generation taking place in the region," Anjan Roy, general manager of the western regional load dispatch center, Power Grid Corp., told the Economic Times.

The shortfall would be a lot less if the 2,184 megawatt Dabhol Power Co. plant in Maharashtra were producing power.

Power Grid has asked all the five state governments to buy power from all available sources. "There are a number of independent power projects in Gujarat. We have asked the Gujarat government to bring in the IPP generated electricity into the grid," Roy said. Power Grid wants the states to tap even captive power plants for supply to the grid.

Suresh Prabhu, India's federal energy minister, has asked all concerned to draw up an emergency plan, the paper said.
