Con Edison Makes Progress with Manhattan Outages
LCG, Sept. 17, 2001--Consolidated Edison Co. of New York said this morning it has restored power to more than a third of the customers who lost service in last Tuesday's foreign attack on the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan."We now have about 7,900 customers without power, down from the 12,000 or so knocked out on Tuesday," a Con Edison spokesman said. Most of those 7,900 customers are office buildings, representing multiple energy users.The company said it had no idea how long it would take to complete restoration of service in the nation's financial capital. Con Edison has about 1,900 workers making the repairs, "But we're staying out of the way of the city, state and federal workers looking for survivors," the spokesman said.A major obstacle to the restoration of power has been the need to clear paths for temporary cables through the mountains of debris left by the destruction of the twin-tower World Trade Center. Over the weekend, the company was able to lay 26 miles of cable along curbs and in trenches.Piping is also being similarly laid to provide fuel to emergency generators needed to provide power to the New York Stock Exchange and others as they attempt to resume business today.
