Aquila Begins Building Illinois Power Plant

LCG, Sept. 19, 2001--The Aquila Inc. subsidiary of UtiliCorp United Inc. said yesterday that it had marked with a groundbreaking ceremony the beginning of construction of a 510 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant west of Champaign, Ill.

On hand with hard hats and chrome-plated shovels were officials from Piatt County, Ill., and representatives from Illinois Power Co., Burns & McDonnell Engineering, and Aquila.

Construction of the facility, which is named the Goose Creek Energy Center, will require about 150 workers, and a permanent staff of six will operate the plant. The plant will generate about $185 in new property tax money, with a little more than $100,000 going to the local school district.

"We are pleased to become part of the Piatt County community," said Robert K. Green, chairman of Aquila and president and chief operating officer of UtiliCorp United, at the groundbreaking ceremony. "Demand for power is growing nationwide, making this facility and this community important contributors to the economic growth of the entire country."

Aquila said power from the new plant will be sold into the regional wholesale electricity market. The facility is expected to operate less than 1,500 hours a year, during periods of peak demand.
