NRC Shuts Website in Anti-Terrorist Move

LCG, Oct. 12, 2001--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has shut down its site on the World Wide Web for a review of the information it contains. The agency is concerned that it may have been providing terrorists with useful information.

Yesterday morning, as EnergyOnline Daily News was writing of the shutdown of two reactors at the Palo Verde nuclear complex in Arizona, we turned to the NRC Website hoping to learn whether defective "control equipment" reported by plant operator Arizona Public Service Co. meant the control rod assemblies and related machinery.

The NRC Website wasn't there. Gone with it was the daily plant status report, reports of "events" at commercial reactors, ratings of nuclear power plants, maps showing the locations of nuclear power plants, and lots of other information that is useful to reporters, if not terrorists.

Today, the NRC Website had only a message: "Our site is not operational at this time. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has taken the action to shut down its web site. In support of our mission to protect public health and safety, we are performing a review of all material on our site. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these difficult times."

An NRC spokesman at the agency's Rockville, Md., headquarters said the agency was looking at what information might potentially be of value to terrorists.

The NRC said its Website would remain off-line until further notice.
