Constellation Files License Renewal Applications with the NRC for Two New York Units

LCG, June 29, 2026--Constellation announced on June 26 that it has filed license renewal applications with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend for 20 years the operations of Ginna Clean Energy Center and Nine Mile Point Unit 1 reactors in upstate New York to 2049. Constellation stated that it's decision to invest in these plants to extend their safe and reliable operations into mid-century demonstrates that New York State's renewal of its Zero Emissions Credit (ZEC) program is working as intended. Furthermore, Constellation stated that maintaining its nuclear fleet is estimated to save New Yorkers $50 billion and sustain reliable emissions-free generation resources to serve increasing electricity demands.

'Credible' Threat Puts Three Mile Island on High Alert

LCG, Oct. 18, 2001--A "credible" threat against the Three Mile Island nuclear power facility yesterday prompted federal officials to place the plant on an extra-high state of alert last night. The alert included shutting down the airspace in the area.

The airports at Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pa., were both closed for four hours from about 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. this morning while military aircraft reportedly patrolled area skies and FBI and state police guarded the plant.

Harrisburg International Airport and Lancaster Airport were both reopened this morning.

Three Mile Island, along with all other U.S. nuclear power plants, had been in a "heightened" state of security since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

Last night's alert tightened security further at Three Mile Island, according to officials who said they had no way of knowing when the extra measures would be lifted.

Ralph DeSantis, a spokesman for Three Mile Island, declined to discuss the type of threat received or the additional security measures that were taken, but said "It was deemed to be a credible threat." He added that Three Mile Island was the only nuclear power plant threatened.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Diane Screnci said this morning that the agency had warned Three Mile Island at around 7:00 p.m.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said that the airport shutdown had been part of a "temporary flight restriction" that grounded aircraft within a 20-mile radius of the plant.
