LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Key takeaway from this sensitivity analysis is the potential increase in fossil fuels in some regions and potentially a significant increase in wholesale prices in ERCOT.

Peabody Coal Plans 1,500 Megawatts in Illinois
LCG, Oct. 23, 2001--Peabody Energy said yesterday it had asked Illinois regulators for permission to build a 1,500 megawatt coal-fired power plant in the southwestern part of the state, about 30 miles east of St. Louis, Mo.Designed with advanced environmental controls to enable the use of the region's high sulfur coals, the Prairie State Energy Campus would be built on top of a 6 million ton-per-year underground coal mine owned by Peabody, and is expected to be among the cleanest coal-fueled plants in the Midwest, the company said.Peabody is the world's largest coal company and its products fuel more than 9 percent of U.S. electricity generation. With the Prairie State Energy Campus and another 1,500 megawatt plant in Kentucky, called the Thoroughbred Energy Campus, the company is putting its coal to its own use.Peabody said both facilities will offer programs to local colleges and universities to provide academic research opportunities involving energy and environmental technologies, carbon management or biofuel production.Peabody chief executive Irl F. Engelhardt said "We believe that the elements of America's energy crisis remain in place, although they are temporarily masked by soft economic conditions. America will address its energy strategies in due course, and we believe that clean, low-cost electricity from coal will remain the cornerstone of America's long-term energy supplies."Engelhardt said the Prairie State Energy Campus could begin commercial operation in 2006 or 2007. Facility development will begin late next year or early in 2003 and provide about 1,500 jobs during construction. Once complete, the plant will have a full-time workforce of between 400 and 500 and inject $40 to $60 million in annual economic benefits to the regional economy.
