Kazakhstan Hopes to Boost Gas Exports

LCG, Nov. 13, 2001--The government of Kazakhstan is exploring the possibility of exporting natural gas to Europe through Russia's Gazprom pipeline system, Kazakh Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Uzakbay Karabalin said at a government session this morning.

Although it is possible at present to transport Kazakh gas through the Central Asia-Center pipeline and through Russian gas transportation systems, it is also possible that Kazakhstan and investors producing gas in the republic will participate in the expansion and modernization of existing Russian gas pipelines, BBC reported.

Kazakhstan is also looking to transport gas to Turkey through a new Tengiz-Turkmenbashi-Baku-Tbilisi-Erzerum pipeline, but Karabalin said it would be first necessary to "resolve the issue of the status of the Caspian Sea and prepare a final estimate of its oil and gas reserves."

According to Karabalin, "a more interesting" export route for Kazakh gas is the Central Asia-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. According to forecasts from the World Bank, total gas consumption in these countries will amount to more than 4 trillion cubic feet in 2010.

Still, the Gazprom connection to Europe is the most promising of all Kazakh gas transportation projects, Karabalin said.
