India's Videocon Eyes Enron's Dabhol Power

LCG, Dec. 10, 2001--Indian consumer electronics and home appliance giant Videocon is looking for a partner with which to make a bid for Dabhol Power Co., the troubled Enron Corp. project that is India's largest single foreign investment.

Venugopal Dhoot, Videocon's chairman confirmed his company's interest to the Business Standard newspaper on Saturday.

"We are looking at acquiring stake in Dhabol," he said. "We are unlikely to go it alone and are looking at the possibility of roping in a multinational power company as a partner."

Videocon would buy Enron's 65 percent in Dabhol and the 10 percent shares owned by General Electric Co. and Bechtel Enterprises. The remaining 15 percent belongs to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board.

The paper said Videocon has already talked to the state government of Maharashtra and has written to the Industrial Development Bank of India, a key lender to Dhabol, expressing its interest in the company.
