Arizona Approves 1,000 Megawatt Power Plant

LCG, Dec. 12, 2001--Arizona regulators today approved a 1,000 megawatt generating station proposed by Southwestern Power Group II, a Phoenix-based power plant developer that wants to build the new facility near the town of Bowie in the southeastern corner of the state.

With the green light, the developers expect to put the new plant into commercial operation in late 2004. Power will be sold into the Tucson and southeastern Arizona markets, according to Tom Wray, general manager of Southwestern Power.

"We are firmly committed to building a facility that is state-of-the-art in every respect and to being a good corporate citizen," Wray said.

An average of 250 jobs will be created during the plant's 22-month construction period. When operational, the plant will have 35 to 40 full- time employees and an annual payroll of approximately $2.6 million. The company also expects to make as much as $5 million in local purchases each year the facility is in operation, Wray said.

Pat Call, a Cochise County supervisor, said community leaders share in Wray's enthusiasm. "This will be a tremendous asset for the Willcox and Bowie communities and a very welcome addition to the county's business community," he said. "This is the kind of industrial partner that state and county officials need to help us become even more attractive to potential new industry."
