First Energy to Supply 60% of Duquesne Light's Load
LCG, Dec. 19, 2001--First Energy Corp. and DQE Inc. announced jointly yesterday that First Energy Solutions will supply DQE subsidiary Duquesne Light Co. with about 60 percent of the power the utility needs for its native load, upon Duquesne Light entering the PJM West power pool. The agreement will provide Duquesne light with enough capacity to meet anticipatedcapacity credit obligations under PJM Interconnection L.L.C.'s rules. PJM operates the world's largest competitive wholesale electricity market and one of North America's largest power grids.First Energy Solutions will provide capacity from its 2,360 megawatt Bruce Mansfield plant and its 1,630 megawatt Beaver Valley nuclear power plant, both located in Shippingport, Pa., and 1,933 megawatts from its W. H. Sammis plant located in Stratton, Ohio.Until required by Pennsylvania's electric restructuring law to divest itself of its generation assets, Duquesne Light was part owner of all three plants and was operator of the Beaver Valley nuke.First Energy said the agreement, which requires Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval, as well as certification by PJM that these units qualify as PJM capacity under its rules, will provide it with the opportunity to sell the balance of the output of the units either into PJM or into the East Central Area Reliability Coordination Agreement region.
