Indian Point Unit 2 Trips; No Explanation

LCG, Dec. 27, 2001--Indian Pint Unit 2 nuclear reactor tripped off line yesterday morning, according to its new owner, Entergy Corp. of New Orleans. The company had reported the incident without explanation to Westchester County, N.Y., officials

Entergy purchased Indian Point Unit 2 from Consolidated Edison Co. of New York, completing the deal this past fall. There was no way of knowing whether yesterday's trip was related to any of the many problems Con Edison experienced with the plant.

The unit automatically shut after a signal indicated a problem with an electrical breaker in a power transmission circuit at about 7:20 a.m., Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano said in a statement, but it was unlikely that operators had full confidence in that signal. The reactor has tripped before as the result of spurious signals.

Residents in the neighborhood of the Buchanan, N.Y. plant have been nervous since a February 2000 steam generator leak allowed a puff of radioactive steam to escape into the atmosphere. Westchester County announced yesterday's trip to keep the populace informed of the status of the plant.

But no one was willing to put his finger on the cause. "Entergy and NRC officials are investigating the source of the trip," Spano said.
