PG&E Gets Court Okay to Settle Small Claims

LCG, Dec. 28, 2001--Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said yesterday it has received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to settle most of the 12,800 claims against it, but not authority to pay any of them. Settled claims would be paid following acceptance of a plan of reorganization for the utility.

About 80 percent of the claims filed against the utility are fort amounts less than $100,000, and PG&E will be allowed to settle those. The company will also be allowed to settle some claims for amounts greater than $100,000 but less than $5 million.

The court also approved the utility's request to object to groups of claims on the basis that they are, for example, duplicative, late-filed or have been paid, without waiving its right to assert additional objections to the same claims, if necessary.
