Mirant Finally Unloads Chile's Edelnor

LCG, Jan. 2, 2002--Mirant Corp. of the United States said this morning that it completed the $4.5 million sale of its money-losing Chilean electric utility Empresa Electrica del Norte Grande SA , or Edelnor.

In addition to paying Mirant $4.5 million, F.S. Inversiones Ltda. will assume $340 million in debt and try to stave off liquidity problems.

Edelnor, which consists mostly of 760 megawatts of generation capacity, has been unable to settle into a profitable routine in northern Chile, where it is one of the principal generators of electricity. Mirant put the company on the block last October after writing off its entire investment in the company.

At that time, it also said it would not invest another dollar in Edelnor.
