Energy Department Releases Documents

LCG, March 26, 2002-Complying with court orders, The U.S. Department of Energy released 11,000 pages.

Judicial Watch and the Natural Resources Defense Council filed the lawsuit that forced the Energy Department to give up the documents. The administration took its time and released the papers hours before the mandated deadline.

Democrat legislators, environmentalists, and consumer advocates insist that Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force favored oil, gas and coal industries when forming energy policy. Cheney's office has verified that meetings were held with Enron officials and many other industry giants.

Released information includes many meetings between government policy makers and utility executives from Duke Energy Corp., UtiliCorp United , Exelon Corp and others. Papers also revealed meetings with ChevronTexaco, Shell Oil Co., Ashland Inc. , Anadarko Petroleum (news/quote) and the American Petroleum Institute.
In a press release Secretary of Energy SpencerAbraham insisted that the department "not only sought but included all viewpoints."
Another suit has been filed by Judicial Watch, the conservative government watchdog group, regarding additional task force documents.

Several other government agencies released documents on Monday: the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior, the Agriculture Department, and the White House Office of Management and Budget.

White House energy policy director Andrew Lundquist announced last week that he will resign from his post to pursue a position in industry.

President Bush says he will fight to retain other documents that have been requested.
