New York Power Authority to Develop New Nuclear Facility in Upstate New York

LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Nuke Corrosion Costs Burden Ohio Plant

LCG, March 26, 2002-Investigations regarding regarding reactor corrosion may keep nuclear plants shut down.

Boric Acid in an Ohio nuclear plant corroded the cap of the reactor, forming a significant hole.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) ordered that 69 pressurized water reactors be inspected after the hole was found in the 25-year-old David-Besse plant. Special attention will be given to the six reactors sharing the same Babcock and Wilcox construction as the David-Besse reactor.

The damaged reactor will take three months to two years to repair, depending on whether or not a new reactor head will need to be constructed. In the meantime the plant will be forced to pay ten to fifteen million dollars monthly to buy power in order to sustain its 7 percent of company FirstEnergy's total energy. Repairs will cost at least $10 million and replacing the head would cost $20 million.

Midwest wholesale power prices for deliveries next summer increased by twelve percent last week, possibly caused by energy traders who fear limited energy supply.

Corrosion has been found in reactor nozzles of other plants, but none of the damage is nearly as serious as that at the David-Besse reactor. Plants and generators anxiously wait for inspectors from NRC to approve their reactors.

Officials say corrosion of this type poses no public risk.
