LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Calpine Corp. has promoted E. James Macias to executive vice president and chief operating officer. Macias will be in charge of the company's power generation, Calpine Energy Services, and Gas Resources, among other ventures. Macias has served as senior vice president -- power and industrial marketing, and led negotiations with California for long-term power contracts. Prior to joining Calpine, Macias worked for 22 years within the gas supply and power generation businesses at Pacific Gas & Electric Co.Daniel R. Allard has been promoted to senior vice president of Calpine Canada. Allard, who joined Calpine in 1997, was most recently vice president of business development - Calpine Canada. He will manage power generation, oil and gas operations, and energy trading and marketing. Michael P. Thomas has been promoted to senior vice president at Calpine Corp. In his new role, Thomas will be responsible for cash management. He will continue as corporate treasurer, overseeing Calpine's corporate credit function. Before joining Calpine in 1994, Thomas worked for nearly a decade in the banking industry. Joseph E. Ronan, Jr. has been promoted to senior vice president of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Calpine Corp. Ronan, who served Calpine as general counsel from 1992 through 1998 before becoming vice president of government and regulatory affairs in 1999, has also worked as an attorney with the federal government, the state of Wyoming and in the oil and renewable energy industries.
