Agreement for Long Island Generation Signed

LCG, Apr. 9, 2002--The Long Island Power Authority and PPL Corp. have set in motion plans for two 44-megawatt units to be built by 2003 in Freeport, NY.

The terms discussed by the parties would have the output of one unit secured for LIPA under a power-purchase agreement. The other unit would be owned by Freeport, which would operate both units, which are to burn natural gas, and oil as a backup fuel. The site is now home to an oil-fired plant used by the Freeport Municipal Electric Utility. That plant will be decommissioned to make way for the new turbines.

Operations are expected to begin in the summer of 2003, following approval by the governing bodies of PPL and LIPA.
