EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Grid Operators in Northeast Work Together

LCG, March 15, 2002-The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) and Pennsylvania- New Jersey- Maryland Interconnection LLC (PJM) agreed to combine efforts in facilitating power trade in the region.

On Wednesday the northeast operators announced their intent to improve market efficiency by coordinating regulations and resources. They plan to homogenize rules as well as allow for more leeway in decisions, such as which plants will supply a region's regular or emergency needs . Quarterly Reports would be given to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and state public utility commissions.

If the agreement falls through then FERC may mediate further discussion.

As the nation's first regional transmission organization (RTO), PJM Interconnection controls the largest wholesale power market in the world. NYISO and PJM's combined markets affect supply about 41 million people with electricity in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Washington D.C, and New York.
