Uncertainty Delays California Plant
LCG, March 19, 2002-Midway Sunset Cogeneration Company has suspended its plan to expand its Midway-Sunset plant near McKittrick in Central California. The new construction would have yielded 500 MW, but the company was hesitant to start the large Kern county project, citing uncertainty in California's wholesale electricity market. The county has four plant projects that have not been delayed, but Assembly member Roy Ashbum (R ) said that only two of the five planned plants in the region will become viable sources of power in the near future. One of the plants, a ChevronTexaco project, is operating already, produces 320 MW, and after a second phase of development will be fully on-line by July 2003.
