Deep Sea Pipeline from Iran to India
LCG, March 19, 2002-India may receive natural gas from Iran by way of a deepsea pipeline. While plans for an onshore pipeline through Pakistan are still dominant, studies are being undertaken by Italian companies Snamprogetti and Saipem in order to determine whether or not a 2000 kilometer underwater pipeline will be practical. It would be built in the Arabian Sea, skirting Pakistan's shoreline. Australian company BHP is conducting the onshore pipeline study, considering carefully the security risk of its passage through Pakistan. The onshore pipeline would allow Iran to sell gas to Pakistan as well and is estimated to cost about $3.5 billion.Pakistan approves of both plans, and Iran reports that it has a good relationship with both India and Pakistan.
