Upcoming G-8 Summit to Address Energy
LCG, May 2, 2002--The G-8 meeting of major industrialized nations will focus on energy for the first time since 1998. The summit's discussions, to be held in Detroit, Michigan today and tomorrow, are part of President Bush's national energy plan, which he presented last year. Leaders are to discuss energy and environment-related technologies, as well as energy security and regulation. The G-8 consists of leaders from the U.S., Japan, Canada, Russia, Germany, Italy, France, and Great Britain; the Detroit summit will bring together energy ministers from these eight countries. U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham has said that the leaders will talk about developing energy trading and establishing energy partnerships.According to the Associated Press, Abraham said, "One of the things the president emphasizedis the need for us to expand our energy partnerships."He also asserted that the U.S. will lead the way in creating new energy technology and also noted the effect of Middle East politics on oil supply. Market reform, diesel technology, and fuel cells are among a few of the specific issues scheduled for discussion sessions. While massive protests occurred during the Genoa G-8 meeting last July, resulting in Italian police shooting and killing a man, no demonstrations have been held as yet in Detroit. Extra police have been appointed and trained to manage potential security threats.
