NRG Wants to Shut Down New England Generators

LCG, May 17, 2002-NRG Energy Inc. is looking into turning off some of its Connecticut generators because they are no longer profitable.

NRG says that it has been running the Devon station generators at a loss and wants to shut them down, although it does not want to retire them completely. The company would like to come to an agreement with the New England Independent System Operator (ISO) where it can get more money to operate the generators.

The generators in question, located near New Haven, are 17 MW diesel-fired unit 10 and 107 MW oil/gas-fired units 7 and 8.

Discussions regarding the generators have been on-going for months, but a May 3 filing has set a 90-day negotiation period in which a resolution will hopefully be reached.

Shutting down the plants this summer could stress an already limited energy supply, but the ISO and NRG are not at a stage of disagreement where the ISO is talking about blocking the shutdown.
