German Energy Bid May Be Ruled Monopolistic
LCG, May 21, 2002-Germany's E.On wants to buy the majority stake in gas distributor Ruhrgas, but German officials fear the move may threaten competition. E.On already sits in a dominant position in the gas and electricity market, and experts fear that if the company is allowed to take over Ruhrgas, competition may become significantly compromised. The German Cartel Office has ruled against the sale, finding it monopolistic. E.On says the takeover will initiate new jobs and ensure gas supply without endangering the free market. The company would realize a majority stake by purchasing from BP and Bergemann GmbH.The Ministry of Economics will rule whether or not to overturn the Cartel Office decision by an unspecified date in July.
