1,569-Mile Chinese Transmission in Operation

LCG, June 3, 2002-A 1,569-mile (2,525 kilometer) transmission line in China now connects the Western province of Sichuan to Eastern provinces such as Shanghai and Zhejiang.

Sichuan plants will supply 750 million kilowatt-hours to Shanghai and Zhejiang, as agreed upon by the Chinese government.

An inefficient and incomplete electricity grid has lead to serious waste, such as in the case of the $3 billion Ertan hydroelectric plant in Sichuan, which lacks customers and must operate below capacity.

The new transmission line comes at a time when China is redefining its electricity industry and laying out plans to split up its state-run electricity monopoly. China plans to have all of its transmission connected by 2005, with the exceptions of Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hainan.
