Taiwan Closes Nuke After Cooling Leak

LCG, June 17, 2002--A Taiwan Power 951-MW reactor was automatically shut down after a cooling hose leak was detected.

Taiwan Power, or Taipower, has repaired the hose, which transports cooling water, and says the leak posed no radiation threat whatsoever. The plant is awaiting Taiwan Atomic Energy Council approval to resume operations.

The shutdown is the second for the generator this month. June 6 saw a malfunctioning electronic card, which was fixed within three days.

Taiwan has about 26,650 MW of electricity capacity.
